You’d have to be living under a rock (pun very much intended!) to be unaware of how popular geodes, gems and crystals have become in interiors. If I had to say where it all started, I’d point the finger at agate, which started popping up on the reg about five years ago in slice and slab form as coasters, trivets and even tabletops. Fast forward to now, and crystals of all types—quartz, amethyst, citrine and the list goes on—are becoming pretty common decorative accents, and I’m not sure how I feel about it.

Which crystals are good for decoration?
Many people begin incorporating vividly colored crystals into home decor because they love the gorgeous look and because they add a luxurious accent to any surface. But decorating with crystals may offer additional benefits beyond aesthetics.
Crystals for the Office: Shungite and Pyrite
Shungite is an important stone for the work desk or home office because of the natural antioxidants found in the stone’s fullerenes. Unlike any other stone on Earth, this stone, found only in Russia, can absorb and neutralize the electromagnetic radiation (EMF) put out by electronic devices. If your desk is covered with a computer, tablet, phone or other electronic devices, this stone can be useful in combating that energy. It also connects with the root chakra, which will benefit your work by keeping you grounded and helping you to harness courage and resourcefulness.
Bring in the energy of a Pyrite Crystal to promote a wealth of ideas, opportunities and confidence in the office. Set the Pyrite on top of your business card to manifest abundance. The courage, motivation and overall sense of abundance you feel when connected with Pyrite’s energy will drive you to take those necessary risks or capitalize on opportunities for growth.
Crystals for the Bedroom: Rose Quartz, Selenite and Amethyst
Looking for crystals to help you sleep and promote relaxation? What better crystal to have in the bedroom than one that invokes feelings of peace and unconditional love? Rose Quartz to the rescue! It is the quintessential stone for rediscovering self-love, as it brings you to realize that you deserve the same compassion and understanding that you give to others. Those with families can benefit for rose quartz especially. With a soft energy, rose quartz soothes the remaining tensions from the day, and keeps you from going to sleep angry as it influences empathy, forgiveness, and lowered stress.
Crystals for the Kid’s Room: Celestite, Blue Lace Agate and Smoky Quartz
Celestite crystals have a calming and soothing energy. The gentle vibration of this luminesce stone calms chaos and ushers in a protective field of white light. Often tempered by bad dreams, help your child get to sleep easier by soothing their fears. Objects cast scary shadows that take on a new life in a child’s active imagination, but celestite can counteract those anxieties by serving as the light to combat the shadows. Celestite’s energy is a rainbow of happiness that will inspire good thoughts, happy dreams and more sleep-filled nights for you!

You’ll enjoy the anti-inflammatory effect it has on tense muscles, and the soothing effect it has on your overall spirit. Identification of Leaded crystals
Many crystal makers mark their items in some way to help identify their brand over an imitator or counter fitter. A lot of major brands of quality crystal such as Waterford Crystal or Baccarat Crystal use an acid stamp to mark their items. These markings can be tricky to find because they are usually small and light grey in color making them blend into the crystal. Carefully inspect your pieces for these acid stamps and if your eyesight is not the best you may even want to invest in a magnifying glass. If you find a marking that you are not familiar with a little internet research should help you identify if they make lead crystal and if so what kind of quality their items are made with. Some other crystal makers simply mark their items with a paper sticker or foil sticker which can fall off or wear away over time. These stickers can also be removed or placed falsely on inferior items.
What are the harmful crystals?
Crystals are all harmful, though some more so than others, and NONE genuinely has in the slightest degree the protective qualities that are widely claimed for certain types, so put away or (much better) discard any that you have. Moldavite, although technically not a crystal, is extremely harmful in being a particularly powerful ungrounding agent, and thus potently opens you to the astral sub-reality and thus the dark force, and has no genuine protective effects, so it too is for discarding and certainly not carrying on your person. If you have any crystals and supposedly energy-active stones such as moldavite, it is not enough not to actively use them. You need to get them out of your living space as soon as possible, because they continue to progressively weaken you as long as they are in any part of your energy system, which typically would extend for more than two metres radius around your body.
Some minerals can release toxins into the skin when acted upon by natural oils or sweat and magic-users in particular can run into problems with toxicity when consuming gem elixirs, massaging the skin with crystal infused oils, or cutting or engraving stones to make talismans, which can release dust which, in turn, can easily be inhaled. (Of dust in the eyes, lungs and sinuses is never a good thing, regardless of toxicity.)
As is true with many insects and animals, it is often the brightest and most beautiful crystals that are the most dangerous. As a general note, almost all blue and green stones, especially brightly colored ones, contain copper/or arsenic, but be sure to research each stone individually.
